Porcupines do not have the ability to “shoot” their quills. When in danger, the porcupine erects the quills and runs, jumps or spins to drive them into the predator.
The long white hairs that protrude from the back of the African crested porcupine are guard hairs. Positioned around the rear of the animal, they literally feel the predator and determine the exact direction to charge backwards.
