Boca & Cheryl Kisacky: The Two Will Not Be Separated

Kendalia, TX – Thursday, February 4, 2010 – When Cheryl Kisacky walked into Animal Control Services (ACS) in San Antonio last Friday, you could read it all over her face: she didn't want to be there. She was at a place she swore she would never be, at the pound looking at her options to try and help her beloved rescued dog, Boca.

Six years old, Boca has only known a warm bed and love every day. Seeking a better life for herself and Boca, Cheryl came to Texas for a promised job that fell though. She and Boca have since been living in her pick-up truck and Cheryl hadn't eaten for two days so that Boca could. "That's no place for her to live," Cheryl told an ACS officer tearfully in the front lobby as she heard her options — the beloved companion would be immediately put to death if surrendered to ACS. Cheryl would not leave Boca. Instead, she left with a bag of donated dog food and hope that the animal rescue community would be able to help. With hope that her story could be spread, yearning for assistance, Cheryl and Boca drove off together.

This story was immediately circulated among the animal welfare groups and caring individuals in the San Antonio area. Many quickly spoke up with offers of assistance. A temporary home has been found for Cheryl and Boca, ACS has provided dog food, and the San Antonio Food Bank has stepped up with donations of food. The needs of humans and non-human animals are interlaced and there is no reason that helping one should exclude the other. This is a wonderful example of service to all beings, human and non-human alike.

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) in Kendalia is helping to lead the charge to assist Cheryl and Boca with the help of many others. Donations for this unique situation may be made via the WRR Online Store. These funds will be earmarked specifically for Cheryl and Boca and will not mingle with general support of WRR's work for wildlife.

WRR is proud to serve as the fiduciary in this unique and critical situation. 100% of the monies received will be passed directly to Cheryl. We do want to assure our regular donors that it will in no way interfere with our 33-year mission of saving the lives of wildlife in need.

About Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation

Founded in 1977 by Lynn Cuny, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) (www.wildlife-rescue.org) is located on 187 acres in Kendalia, Texas, outside of San Antonio and Austin. WRR is widely recognized as a superior rehabilitation and sanctuary facility and is accredited by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries (GFAS). In the over 30 years of its existence, well over 100,000 animals have been brought to WRR from surrounding areas as well as from around the country; the majority of these were rehabilitated and released. Those who cannot be released with a reasonable chance for survival in the wild, but who have a good quality of life in captivity, are given permanent sanctuary. WRR also provides a permanent home for a variety of birds and mammals who have been the victims of the exotic pet trade, rescued from roadside zoos, or used in research labs and therefore cannot be returned to their natural habitats.
