Tortured Puppy Rescued by Wildlife Rescue &
Rehabilitation
Kendalia, TX – Friday, July 11, 2008
– He's back on his feet but not out of the woods. A
two-month-old mixed breed puppy was tortured by an intruder
into his owner's home in Blanco on July 3. Concerned neighbors
contacted Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation in Kendalia
and were told to bring him in immediately for examination
by their clinic staff.
Phoenix, as he has been named by his rescuers,
suffered serious neurological and organ damage and appeared
to have had detergent forced down his throat. "This was
one of the cruelest and most vicious acts I can imagine against
a helpless puppy," said Lynn Cuny, Wildlife Rescue's
Executive Director. "It still isn’t clear whether
he will survive or, if he does, how permanently impaired he
will be. But he has such a spirit that everyone who has seen
him has been captivated and are giving all out efforts to
save him."
The puppy's injuries were so serious that
Wildlife Rescue carried him to San Antonio to be seen at South
Texas Veterinary Specialists, where he was put on intravenous
fluids, x-rayed, and given intensive care. Subsequently he
was moved to Lake Animal Hospital in Austin, where Dr. Ellen
Jefferson, WRR's consulting veterinarian, works and his care
continues. A variety of specialists who have helped with Phoenix's
treatment, including a radiologist, ultrasonographer, Dr.
Jefferson, and Wildlife Rescue have donated their services
and resources.
The Blanco Police Department is investigating
and cruelty charges are expected. Already a number of people
have stepped forward an offered to give Phoenix a permanent
home if he survives. "A horrible thing like this obviously
shows us the worst of human behavior," said Ms. Cuny,
"but the response to the tragedy also shows us the best.
If this little guy survives it will be because so many have
given so much."

About Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation
Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR)
was founded in 1977 in San Antonio by Lynn Cuny. Our mission
is to provide rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned,
injured, and displaced wildlife, and provide sanctuary with
dignity for non-releasable and non-native wild animals who
have been the victims of the exotic pet trade, rescued from
roadside zoos, or used in research. Today WRR volunteers and
staff annually receive 5,000–6,000 animals at our 187-acre
sanctuary outside Kendalia, Texas. Over 600 wild and farmed
animals make their permanent home at WRR.
