Roger & Phyllis Sherman Animal Care ComplexSan Antonio Facility: Roger & Phyllis Sherman Animal Care Complex

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) opened its Roger & Phyllis Sherman Animal Care Complex in San Antonio in early January 2010. Since WRR moved out of Lynn Cuny's backyard in 1981 to a four-acre sanctuary in Leon Springs (and then to Boerne's 21 acres and now to 187 acres in  Kendalia), this is our first location back in San Antonio.

The property, which was funded by the Sherman Foundation, serves as a drop-off point for injured and orphaned wildlife, a temporary rehabilitation center for certain species of orphaned mammals and birds, a small rescue and adoption site for cats, and an education center. The immediate care that will be available here is critical in saving more lives and will also relieve pressure on the sanctuary clinic in Kendalia during the busiest time of year. Words can hardly express our appreciation to the Shermans for the generosity that made this possible.

To give you a little more detail on what happens at this new location:

•

Drop-Off & Rehabilitation Center: Rather than having to wait until a volunteer can bring them to the Kendalia Clinic & Rehabilitation Nursery for help, injured and orphaned wild animals will now receive immediate care. Babies of certain species (squirrels, rabbits, songbirds, and opossums) will remain at the Sherman Animal Care Complex until they reach an age where they need the facilities at the Kendalia sanctuary for the next step on their way to release. Others will be evaluated, given care, and readied for immediate transfer to the sanctuary clinic.

•

Volunteers: There are many people who want to help with animal care but for whom the drive to Kendalia is too long. Now volunteers can choose a convenient day and time and help WRR save lives in San Antonio.

•

Cat Shelter & Adoption: We will provide shelter, medical care, sterilization, and adoption for a limited number of domestic cats who are at risk of being killed due to lack homes or shelters willing and able to take them.

•

Education & Advocacy: School groups can come and watch through a large window (just like at the newborns' nursery in a hospital) as orphaned wildlife receive food and care; afterwards they will hear educational presentations from staff and volunteers about wildlife protection issues. Additionally, with this physical presence in San Antonio, WRR will be in a better position to collaborate with others in speaking out on behalf of animals.

Roger & Phyllis Sherman Animal Care ComplexWRR's Sherman Animal Care Complex represents a great step forward in our ability to intervene promptly and effectively for wildlife in need, and it allows us to be a more visible and active presence in San Antonio. We invite you to come by and learn more about what we are doing and to explore volunteer opportunities.
